Wardrobe & Grooming

This includes how appropriately you are dressed for the particular job and environment, co-ordination of your clothing, neatness vs. sloppiness, and formality vs. informality.

Here are some aspects to consider when preparing yourself for an interview:

      • Dress in a style consistent with the type of position for which you are applying.  When in doubt, it’s better to err on the conservative side.  Of course, there could be jobs where a more flamboyant style would fit in perfectly.  The real objective is to dress appropriately for the atmosphere where you would like to work.
      • Be sure that your outfit is co-ordinated and your shoes are well polished.
      • Your clothes should be fresh, neat and pressed.
      • Your jewellery should be sparse and tasteful.
      • In bad weather, get rid of your coat and umbrella before you go into the interviewer’s office.
      • Always check your appearance in a mirror before the interview.
      • Although an obvious point, this is a good opportunity to evaluate such things as fragrance (strong vs. subtle), antiperspirants (effective even when in anxiety-producing interviewing situations), nail and hair care (are they clean and is the style you have been used to the most flattering and suitable for the work environment), mouth and breath freshness (don’t drink liquor or eat exotic foods before your interview), and never smoke or chew gum in an interview.
